Berlin Lake assured high water levels

A decades long struggle came to an end last week when the United States Army Corps of Engineers announced to a crowded Deerfield town hall that Berlin Lake will be kept at summer pool levels through Labor Day, as long as water is available.

At a meeting last Thursday in Deerfield, Col. Adam Czekanski, commander of the USACE's Pittsburgh District, explained that in the past the drawdown of Berlin Lake was required to begin in early July. Under the new water control manual, the lake's water isn't required downstream until Sept. 7. The weather, he said, could alter that timeline.
